Why a Subscription?
First of all: this text is only relevant if you are using the Google Play version of PublicArtExplorer!
The FOSS version comes without restrictions.

Thank you for considering a PublicArtExplorer subscription. Your subscription unlocks additional functionality and helps me continue developing PublicArtExplorer as a free and open source application, without advertisements and without hidden trackers.
The subscription unlocks several advanced features:
- Selection of the servers used to query artworks (Overpass)
- Access to the raw OpenStreetMap data
- Creating and editing artworks directly within PublicArtExplorer. This requires an OpenStreetMap account as well as some understanding of how OpenStreetMap works. Images are stored on Wikidata, which additionally requires an account with the Wikimedia organization.
- And whatever else I may come up with in the future…
In addition, your subscription / donation helps finance…
- the operation of a dedicated Overpass server for artwork details
- the integration of commercial OpenStreetMap map services
- and, depending on the level of donations, possibly even operating my own OpenStreetMap tile server
…in the future.
Why a subscription instead of a one-time purchase?
Primarily because of the ongoing costs for server hosting and commercial map providers.
As an alternative, you can also obtain PublicArtExplorer from one of the non-commercial app stores and receive all Expert Mode features except for the commercial OSM map service. Of course, voluntary donations are always appreciated.
